George Knudson Great Hitter of a Golf Ball!

Hogan wasn’t the only one who could pure it. As technology continues to erode the skill level needed to properly strike a golf ball, we are fortunate to have such mastery of the swing archived for future generations to ponder. How did a guy like George cover the flag from tee to green with archaic gear and old golf balls? It’s time to wake up people! This was 40 years ago. Nobody strikes it like this anymore. Nobody!

I completely agree with the comments about modern golf. I know a very popular PGA/Champions Tour member very well and he agrees, as well. He said as the equipment got easier, his advantage in skill was erased. It’s sad, really.
The old school guys thought about shot shape and control, not straight ahead power.

I still take out the wooden woods and old blades just for fun…

No one comes to mind… all I have to do is watch TV and see today’s pros hitting it all over the map. The courses allow it.. and the gear promotes it. The important values of the game are gone. Driving it straight.. keeping the ball below the hole.. hitting it close because the greens were not overly manicured. This years Canadian Open showed that if a course is set up with long rough, the modern silly gear doesn’t really help much. Big names took early exits.

@lagpressure Out of today’s players, are there any who you rate as highly as these guys (Moe, trevino, hogan, george etc), or even close, for ball striking. Who do you rate the best today? I guess it’s hard to say, as today’s swings are for today’s technology.

@lagpressure I agree. I buy all old clubs from goodwill. heavy old same snead and wilson blades

Looks so much like Hogan. Those guys had great leg action. Love the natural golf swing book. RIP George.

@trapsmv9 Not really an endomorph…this video is “squashed.” Made him look short and fat (and also made it look like he swung super flat, which he didn’t). I think it’s because this is actually someone videotaping their TV screen. According to wikipedia, he was 5’11″ and 160 pounds, which is pretty skinny.

  9. taumelgolfer says:

its all about the glasses :)

  10. trapsmv9 says:

I’d never really noticed how much of an endomorph Knudson was. But, boy, could he strike a golf ball.

@lagpressure I think Tiger is Finished unless he starts wearing leg braces like polio people do. He’s got NO stable base because of his congenital defects in his knee/calf/achilles. Watch how Tiger is hunching down and stabbing at contact.

We have over 2000 video’s, pics, sequences, articles of all the great players. Some very rare and obscure stuff too over on our website

Thanks for posting Lag. George appears more on top of the ball than I realized. I will check out the forum. Happen to have any Demaret footage?

  14. xedvux says:

    I love Knudson’s smooth swing.

Anyone know what sunglasses Knudson is wearing?

  15. etherandytuber says:

Wow – this is Gold Dust. Please make some copies on DVD before the VHS wears out. I know there are lots of real golf swing fans who would love to get hold of the whole film!
    Thanks for sharing…

    “Knudson has a million-dollar swing and a 10-cent putter.

I recently did an in depth book review of George’s work on the “Advanced Ball Striking Forum”. You might find it an interesting read.

Thanks for posting this footage. It almost looks like he exaggerates his weight transfer more than other golfers. I now have Georges book and have been working on a swing based on his theories. It is really starting to work for me. I swing with Mizuno MP-57′s.

  19. lagpressure says:

The simple answer for the reason no one swings like this anymore is that this kind of ball striking is not required to make a living playing golf. The top players in the world are hitting around 50% of their fairways. It’s deplorable, and I rarely watch modern golf. In the old days, courses were much tighter, and the greens were not nearly as good as they are today, so there was much more emphasis on snuggling the ball close to the pin. Lightweight gear has ruined the golf swing also.

  20. MrCapital2010 says:

I see many similarities between the swings of knudson, moe, and hogan. everything is perfect. my question is why no one golfs like this? (Well, i do…lol)

  21. lagpressure says:

George was a much better player than Moe, not as good as Hogan. Moe idolized George, nearly every time we spoke, he would speak ever so highly of George, and for good reason.

Moe felt only Hogan, George and Trevino could strike the ball as pure as he did.

  22. MrCapital2010 says:

I put this fella in the same category as Hogan and Moe. Looks like he has mastered the “secret”.

  23. lagpressure says:

In the video Knudson was hitting drives often 270 yards with a small persimmon head and a steel shaft.
That was long enough for him to shoot the course record and not putting all that well, with a couple of three putts actually.

  24. DeniedHealthCare says:

Does this sort of rotary hitting stroke = short hitter?

  25. lagpressure says:

I spent a lot of time with Moe during the 7 years I played on the Canadian Tour, it seems ironically that more attention is on Moe these days, so I posted George here not only because I am one of his biggest fans, but so was Moe Norman. Oh, and of course I am a huge Moe fan also.
